Artwork can serve as a relevant and accessible entry point for fostering the mindsets and practices necessary to sustain a healthy democratic culture. The Art + Democracy initiative will therefore center dialogue, participation, and inquiry as skills that can be learned and practiced through meaningful experiences at the Chrysler Museum of Art.
America250
America 250 is a national celebration marking 250 years since America’s founding. It offers a moment to reflect on the country's beginning, present, and future.
Artwork helps make visible the diverse and complex history of the nation’s earliest years, offering a powerful way to explore America's founding story and ideals. To help visitors reflect on America’s history and future, we’ve created America 250 Discovery Totes. These bags will be available for checkout at the museum’s welcome desk and will include reflective prompts, sketchbooks, and unexpected objects to help visitors dig deeper into American artwork and American history. In May, a special program at the Moses Myers House will explore the role of Jewish patriots during the American Revolution. In July, our annual Wonder Wednesdays free family programs will explore different themes and ideas connected with America 250.Events

To support our public partnerships and programming, a key component of the initiative is the Art + Democracy Fellowship. This unique partnership with Old Dominion University’s School of Public Service led to the selection of Sean Paul Williams as the inaugural fellow. Williams is a multidisciplinary scholar specializing in media studies, marketing, and Policy and is currently finishing their Master’s in Public Administration at ODU.
