The Chrysler Museum of Art Kicks Off its Fall Season with Six Inspiring Exhibitions That Offer Something for Every Art Lover
NORFOLK, Va., August 7, 2025– The Chrysler Museum of Art is proud to announce its 2025 fall lineup of exhibitions that invite visitors to consider the many ways art reflects and defines the world around us. From revolutionary photography in Mexico and Haiti to pioneering women artists and mid-century modern design, these upcoming exhibitions represent the range and inclusivity of the globally recognized Museum at One Memorial Place, Norfolk, Virginia.

Constructing Mexico: Photography and National Identity
On view August 7—November 30, 2025, in the Frank Photography Gallery
Constructing Mexico: Photography and National Identity explores the evolution of photography in Mexico through works drawn from the Chrysler Museum of Art’s permanent collection and local collectors. Featuring more than fifty-five works, the exhibition highlights how photography has shaped and reflected Mexico’s national identity, from 19th-century commercial images to 20th-century revolutionary depictions.

Tapio Wirkkala: Still

Tapio Wirkkala became an iconic figure of Mid-Century Modern design, a style still revered today for its clean lines, simplicity, functionality, and sincere appreciation for materials. Still highlights Wirkkala’s craftsmanship in glass alongside his works in ceramic, wood, and silver.

Susan Watkins and Women Artists of the Progressive Era
On view from October 17, 2025, to January 11, 2026, in the Special Exhibitions Gallery
Susan Watkins and Women Artists of the Progressive Era examines how women at the turn of the twentieth century overcame barriers and achieved success within the professional art world. Centered on the career of Susan Watkins (1875–1913), the exhibition offers a look into the environment in which Watkins and other female artists of the time forged their professional identities.

Nam June Paik: Electronic Television

In 1963, Nam June Paik (American, born in Korea, 1932-2006) debuted a series of installations comprised of modified TV sets in an exhibition titled “Exposition of Music – Electronic Television.” The television screen would soon become an iconic element in Paik’s work, seen in the Chrysler Museum’s Hamlet Robot (1996) and Dogmatic (1996), on view in accompaniment to the screening of Global Groove (1973).

Beyond the Mountains: Danny Lyon’s Photography in Haiti

Between 1983 and 1986, American photographer Danny Lyon made a series of trips to Haiti with the initial goal of photographing Port-au-Prince’s club scene. What he actually ended up capturing was a country in the midst of revolution against dictatorship at the hands of the Duvalier family.

Architects of Being: Louise Nevelson and Esphyr Slobodkina

This exhibition expands on the notion of artistic character and the invariable ways artists construct their personas, their practices, and their legacies through the work of Louise Nevelson and Esphyr Slobodkina. Both pioneering women artists working in a male-dominated, midcentury American art world, Architects of Being celebrates their constructive impulses manifested through overlapping themes of abstraction, installation, assemblage, and fashion, as well as migration and identity-building.
Whether you’re drawn to minimalist design, intimate portraiture, or journeying through history, visitors to the Museum will find moments of reflection, discovery, and inspiration throughout the fall.
