Internationally Renowned Artist JJJJJerome Ellis to Perform at the Chrysler Museum of Art During Mixtape

NORFOLK, Va., April 21, 2025

WHAT: Celebrate the opening of JJJJJerome Ellis: Contradictions—on view in the Box from May 1 through November 2, 2025—during the Chrysler Museum’s Mixtape First Thursday, your chance to wine and rewind with an evening of community and artmaking.

Each First Thursday features fun and surprising gallery activations along with opportunities to make art, get crafty, and meet new people. In May, visitors will also have the chance to meet JJJJJerome Ellis, who will be at the Museum to discuss their work and share a musical performance rooted in their interdisciplinary practice.

WHO: JJJJJerome Ellis (Grenadian-Jamaican American, born 1989) is a stuttering, Afro-Caribbean composer, poet, and performer based in Norfolk, Virginia. They have performed at acclaimed venues such as Tate Modern in London; The Whitney Biennial and Highline in New York; and UCLA’s Center for the Art of Performance in California, among many others.

WHERE: Chrysler Museum of Art, One Memorial Place, Norfolk

WHEN: Thursday, May 1, 2025, from 5–8 p.m. Artist performance at 7 p.m. in Huber Court.

WHY: Mixtape First Thursday is your chance to connect at your local community hub, the Chrysler Museum of Art.

MORE: In addition to the exhibition opening, visitors to First Thursday can also:

  • Explore the Museum through a Dungeons & Dragons-inspired quest
  • Make space for catharsis with Bad Art Art Therapy
  • Share your latest reads at a casual book club hosted by Museum Librarian Liz Weir
