Lunch will be provided and a certificate of completion will be awarded at the conclusion. Participating teachers will be compensated $300 for their time and dedication.
Applications are open from April 10 through May 31. All awarded participants will be notified by June 4.
The Chrysler Museum of Art invites Hampton Roads educators to learn about a fascinating and multi talented artist, Akinola Lasekan, during this professional development opportunity. Spend time in the gallery to experience the exhibition I Am Copying Nobody: The Art and Political Cartoons of Akinola Lasekan. Lasekan is a featured artist in a newly published educator resource, collaboratively created with curators and educators from the Chrysler Museum and Hampton University Museum.
Throughout this session, teachers will reference the educator guide, Young Storytellers: Envisioning Intangible Cultural Heritage from Three Modern Nigerian Artists and strategize how to integrate it into their teaching setting. All teachers will leave with classroom-ready resources.
Young Storytellers: Envisioning Intangible Cultural Heritage from Three Modern Nigerian Artists delves into the artworks of Lamidi Fakeye, Clara Etso Ugbodaga-Ngu, and Akinola Lasekan to unpack three elements of Intangible Cultural Heritage: passing of knowledge, social practices, and oral traditions/stories. Through this guide, educators and students will have space and knowledge to begin the expansive conversation on the importance of Intangible Cultural Heritage and how people can use it to express themselves artistically.
