Between 1991 and 1992, artist Carrie Mae Weems traveled across the Sea Islands off the coast of Georgia and South Carolina to explore African American history and culture. The result of these travels was the Sea Island Series: a group of more than twenty works that paired text and images. In the work Untitled (Boone Plantation), Weems captures an image of buildings in South Carolina that once housed enslaved peoples. She pairs this haunting image with folklore about enslaved people who could fly back to Africa at will.
