FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Chrysler Museum of Art to Reopen to Public on June 20
— Members-only opening planned for June 16–19 —
NORFOLK, Va. (June 5, 2020) — The Chrysler Museum of Art plans to reopen to the public on June 20. From June 16 to June 19, members will get an early opportunity to visit the Museum. In planning its reopening, the Chrysler has adopted several guidelines designed for the safety of visitors and staff, including limiting the number of people in the facilities to 25% of normal capacity. To help maintain capacity limits, the Museum will offer free admission timed tickets that can be reserved online in advance. The Museum will continue to follow the regulations and guidance set forth by the Centers for Disease Control, the Commonwealth and the City of Norfolk.
The Museum will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the hours of 10–11:30 a.m. will be reserved for visitors over 60 and those who are at higher risk for severe illness. Following these designated hours, the Museum will operate at lower capacity on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The Museum’s galleries and Museum Shop will be open with limited capacity. Wisteria restaurant will be open for grab-and-go options. The dining room will be closed. Interactive spaces, including the Wonder Studio, as well as the Reading Room will be closed until further notice. The Museum hopes to offer glass demonstrations at the Perry Glass Studio with limited capacity and appropriate distancing. Reservations to attend glass demonstrations can be made at chrysler.org.
Visitor Guidelines
The below guidelines will be in place to ensure the safest visitor experience possible.
- Facing Covering: Visitors ages 3 and up are required to wear a face covering for the safety of our visitors and staff and per Governor Ralph Northam’s mask mandate for the state of Virginia. Disposable masks will be available with a recommended donation of $2.
- Use the Marked Entrance: At the main entrance, one set of doors will be marked for “Entrance.”
- Reserve Your Ticket: The Museum will be using free timed tickets that stagger entry in half-hour increments. Tickets can be reserved at chrysler.org and by calling the Museum at (757) 664-6200.
- Gallery hosts will monitor entries and exits, and if capacity allows, will grant entry to visitors without tickets. If the Museum is at capacity, a standby line will be established. Visitors will be required to stand 6 feet apart while they wait.
- Scan Tickets Upon Entry: Visitors will be able to scan their own tickets at the Welcome Desk. Admission continues to be free.
- Get a Visitor Guide: Visitor Guides will be available for pickup but will not be reused. A new digital version will be available for personal mobile devices.
- Stay Home if Sick: If prospective visitors are experiencing any signs of illness, the Museum encourages delaying their visit.

ABOUT THE CHRYSLER MUSEUM OF ART
The Chrysler Museum of Art is one of America’s most distinguished mid-sized art museums, with a nationally recognized collection of more than 30,000 objects, including one of the great glass collections in America. The core of the Chrysler’s collection comes from Walter P. Chrysler, Jr., an avid art collector who donated thousands of objects from his private collection to the Museum. The Museum has growing collections in many areas and mounts an ambitious schedule of visiting exhibitions and educational programs each season. The Chrysler has also been recognized nationally for its unique commitment to hospitality with its innovative gallery host program. The Jean Outland Chrysler Library offers a reading room for the general public in the Museum building.
The Perry Glass Studio is a state-of-the-art facility on the Museum’s campus. The studio offers programming for aspiring and master artists alike in a variety of processes including glassblowing, fusing, flameworking, coldworking and neon. The studio has also cultivated a reputation for its cutting-edge performance evenings, and was the host venue of the 2017 Glass Arts Society Conference.
In addition, the Chrysler Museum of Art administers a historic house in downtown Norfolk: the Moses Myers House. General admission is free at all venues. For more information on the Chrysler Museum of Art, visit chrysler.org.
