Chrysler Museum of Art Debuts Two New Exhibitions with Cool Culture and Canned Cocktails

NORFOLK, Va. (August 2, 2024) – First Thursdays at the Chrysler Museum of Art are the perfect occasion to meet new people, enjoy a free date night, or simply wind down the week. This September, First Thursday features the grand openings of two highly anticipated exhibitions: Peter Bremers: Ice to Water and New Frames of Reference: Early French Photographers at Home and Abroad, September 5, 2024, from 5:30–8:30 p.m., at One Memorial Pl, Norfolk.

Peter Bremers (Dutch, born 1957) is celebrated around the world for his monumental, glass sculptures. His latest exhibition, Ice to Water, showcases sixteen new works influenced by his journeys to Iceland and his meditations on the rapidly melting glaciers.

Visitors to First Thursday can immerse themselves in Bremers’s exploration of climate change through film, dance, and art activities. Highlights include a breathtaking short film with aerial views of Iceland’s glaciers, a climate-themed dance premiere by Norfolk Dance Collective, and activities focused on local conservation efforts with the Elizabeth River Project.

Also, premiering this night is New Frames of Reference: Early French Photography at Home and Abroad, featuring fifty vintage photographs from the Chrysler Museum’s collection. Explore the early evolution of photography, France’s technological and aesthetic development in the medium, and a sense of the lives and values of the first generation of photographic creators and consumers to define itself through the framing lens of the camera.
