Charlotte Dumas: Anima
February 16, 2018 — June 3, 2018
Past Exhibition
Charlotte Dumas’ film Anima – referencing the Latin term for “soul” – presents an intimate portrayal of the caisson horses of the Arlington National Cemetery.
The horses lead the caskets of fallen soldiers to their final resting place in the cemetery, a solemn duty done in similar funerary traditions around the world for centuries. The practice is no longer widely done making these animals’ duty even more special.
Dumas photographed and filmed the animals at night in their stables at Fort Myer, Virginia. The horses are depicted falling asleep, an intimate moment most people will never see. In representing these exceptional animals, Dumas makes the connection that all creatures inhabiting the Earth have souls and should be treated with respect and dignity.
