Baldwin Lee

NORFOLK, Va. – The Chrysler Museum of Art presents The South in Black and White: Photographs by Baldwin Lee from Feb. 8 to Aug. 19. Admission is free.

In the 1980s photographer Baldwin Lee traveled through African-American communities in the South capturing images of extraordinary places and people. Working with a large-format view camera in the tradition of his teachers, Walker Evans and Minor White, Lee created works of great form, beauty, and subtlety that reveal a deep feeling for his subjects and their life stories. Lee has an unusual ability to discover people of remarkable presence and spirit in unlikely places.

Lee was born in Brooklyn in 1951 and currently resides in Tennessee where he is a professor of art at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He received a bachelor of science degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a master of fine arts degree from Yale School of Art, where he studied under the famous photographer Walker Evans, who photographed sharecroppers in the 1930s.

Lee’;s work is among the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; University of Michigan Museum of Art, Ann Arbor; University of Kentucky Art Museum, Lexington; Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut; National Trust for Historic Preservation, Washington, D.C.; and the Museum of the City of New York.
