Chrysler Glass Studio Community Art Project

NORFOLK, Va. – (July 2013) – The Chrysler Museum Glass Studio welcomes back guest artist John Drury of Brooklyn, a member of the collaborative glass art team known as CUD. CUD, featuring Drury and Robbie Miller, is known for non-traditional glass projects that are infused with humor and, in this case, compassion.

The public is invited to get creative on Saturdays, July 27, August 3, 10, and 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Chrysler Museum Glass Studio, 745 Duke Street, Norfolk. Guests will paint recycled bottles in different ways that represent Hampton Roads. All materials will be provided, and admission is free.

Drury will work in the Glass Studio August 19 to 25 to complete the project that CUD began last summer. He will work with the Chrysler Museum Glass Studio team and children from ForKids to assemble the decorated glass bottles into whimsical sculptures of domestic objects such as chairs and tables for a final exhibit at the Chrysler Museum Glass Studio. The trash-turned-treasure will be auctioned later to benefit the Chrysler Glass Studio and ForKids, an area nonprofit that fights poverty and homelessness for families and children (www.forkids.org).

“This project will truly capture the creativity of our community,” said Charlotte Potter, Glass Studio manager. “And the work of area participants will go to support not only the Glass Studio but also programs of ForKids for homeless families.” 

CUD is a collaboration between John Drury (b. 1960) and Robbie Miller (b. 1955) that has been in the forefront of the contemporary glass scene for more than 20 years.  They have taught at leading glass schools such as Pilchuck and UrbanGlass, and have served as visiting artists at many universities throughout the United States and abroad. Last summer, Drury and Miller were guest instructors at the Chrysler Museum Glass Studio, teaching a variety of glass processes in a three-day workshop. Their work is conceptually based around reuse, recycling and repurposing of materials.

The Chrysler Museum Glass Studio is located directly across the street from the Chrysler Museum. The Chrysler Museum of Art is one of America’s most distinguished mid-sized art museums with a world-class collection of more than 30,000 objects, including one of the great glass collections in America, The Glass Studio, which opened in November 2011, brings the collection to life through innovative performance and educational programs. The Glass Studio offers free glassmaking demonstrations, classes, and workshops for students and adults.
