Glass Studio Staff, Associates Win Awards

NORFOLK, Va. — (Dec. 11, 2013) — Three Chrysler Museum Glass Studio staff members and four associates won nine of the 16 awards given at the 26th Annual Peninsula Glass Guild Juried Exhibition in Hampton on Dec. 7. The Peninsula Glass Guild was established in 1986 to promote quality art glass in the community and to provide a forum for glass artists to gather together for educational and support purposes.

Robin and Julia Rogers, Glass Studio assistant manager and instructor, respectively, won third place for their blown-glass sculpture “Within Myself.” Staff instructor Joshua DeWall won the Hampton Arts Commission Award for “Glass Consumption (detail)” and an honorable mention for “Sphere.” Charlotte Potter, Chrysler Museum Glass Studio manager and programming director, won an Award of Excellence for “Chest Plate” and an Honorable Mention for “Sister Act (video).”

Studio instructor Kathy Little won an Award of Excellence for “Dibble Box,” and instructor Hannah Kirkpatrick won an Honorable Mention for “Green Afterimage.”

Studio Assistant Michael Butzine received a Scholarship Award, and former Studio Assistant Grant Garmezy won an Honorable Mention for “Small Silent Feeder.” Several of this year’s other winners have also taught classes at the Chrysler’s Norfolk studio in the past.

“The Chrysler Museum Glass Studio is fortunate to have some of the most talented glass artists around,” said Bill Hennessey, director of the Museum. “Our staff, instructors, and assistants know how to work hard and have fun, a wonderful combination for developing creative works such as those honored by the Peninsula Glass Guild.”

Founded in 1939 as the Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences, the Chrysler Museum of Art combines one of America’s great fine arts museums, two significant historic houses and a Glass Studio, the only one of its kind on the East Coast. In addition to maintaining a distinguished permanent collection of over 30,000 objects spanning nearly 5,000 years of history, the Chrysler Museum offers a comprehensive program of changing exhibitions and education activities for visitors of all ages.
