Mark A. Castro, PhD
Director of Curatorial Affairs
Mark A. Castro joined the Chrysler Museum of Art in 2023. As Director of Curatorial Affairs, he leads the institution’s overall artistic program, aligning it with the Museum’s strategic priorities and mission. Castro manages the Museum’s Curatorial, Conservation, and Collection & Exhibitions divisions.
Castro brings nearly two decades of dynamic curatorial experience with an emphasis on Latin American Art. Previously, he was the Inaugural Jorge Baldor Curator of Latin American Art at the Dallas Museum of Art, where he curated a diverse array of exhibitions, including Flores Mexicanas: Women in Modern Mexican Art (2019), Frida Kahlo: Five Works (2021), Devoted: Art and Spirituality in Mexico and New Mexico (2021), Octavio Medellín: Spirit and Form (2022), and Abraham Ángel: Between Wonder and Seduction (2023). Before Dallas, Castro held positions at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where he was involved in numerous exhibitions, including co-curating the internationally acclaimed Paint the Revolution: Mexican Modernism, 1910-1950 (2016). Castro holds an M.A. and a PhD in art history from Bryn Mawr College, and a B.A. in Archaeology and Studio Art from Hamilton College. In 2022, he was a fellow at the Center for Curatorial Leadership and has served on various boards, including the Center for the Advancement of the Study of Early Texas Art and the advisory board for Panorama, Journal of the Association of Historians of American Art. Castro lectures widely and has taught courses at various universities, including the University of Pennsylvania and Southern Methodist University.
Castro’s creativity and empathy help shape the institution’s artistic offering, highlighting storytelling and the power of art to enable us to see the world – and each other – in new ways. He is focused on developing projects that appeal to the Museum’s regional community, but which at the same time speak to broader national and international issues.
