Photography Open Call

The Chrysler Museum of Art is hosting an open call for photographers to show their work as part of an upcoming exhibition on the theme of community. The exhibition, Come Together, Right Now: The Art of Gathering, will be on view from October 11, 2020, to January 3, 2021. The show will draw on the Chrysler’s collection to explore how communities take shape through celebrations, demonstrations, love, and family.

Come Together, Right Now was conceived in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic as people united in the struggle to control the devastating disease while grappling with the need for social distancing. The public killings of Black and brown people intensified the sense of separation and division as well as the need to create community in order to chart the course toward an inclusive future by addressing intolerance today. The “right of the people peaceably to assemble” as a means of redress and free expression is codified in the 1st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and public demonstrations are among the most powerful and visible means of exercising these rights. We are living in an era of intense protests and powerful demonstrations, and they remind us of the value and power of coming together.

Photographs on these themes will be projected within a section of the exhibition called Together in Justice. The section will include several works that examine racial and cultural divisions, highlight the power of demonstrations and democratic participation through elections, and underscore the way that protest, solidarity, and support can result in stronger, more equitable communities. Works will be selected from the submissions by artist Dawit N.M., whose photography and video exhibition The Eye That Follows recently closed at the Museum, and Seth Feman, PhD, the Chrysler Museum’s curator of photography.

Please note:

• Selected works will be shown electronically as part of a digital slideshow in the Museum’s special exhibition galleries from October 11, 2020, to January 3, 2021. Museum Members can preview the exhibition on October 9 & 10.
• The Chrysler will not use submitted or selected works for any other purpose than this exhibition without consent of the artist, and the electronic files will be deleted after the presentation.
• Submission of work does not guarantee inclusion in the project, and selection of the work for this project does not indicate the work has been acquired by the Chrysler Museum. The artists retain the rights to their work and can request removal from the project at any time.
• All selected artists will be credited in the presentation with their names, websites (if provided), and Instagram handles (if provided). Anonymous work will not be accepted at this time.
• Because the exhibition is designed for visitors of all ages, works that include excessive violence or are sexual in nature will not be considered.
