The Chrysler Museum of Art’s collections and special exhibitions provide a rich learning environment for a variety of college courses and faculty curriculum goals.
Engage students in the collection of African American artists in the holdings of the Chrysler Museum of Art. View the guides
Experience guided or self-guided tours of the galleries and special exhibitions. Docents lead several highlight tours, including tours exploring the ancient worlds of Egypt, China, Greece and Rome; STEAM tours focused on the science of glass; and American art and history tours. Visual Literacy
and Writing Programs
Using the Museum’s collection, these programs can increase students’ ability to observe and write by facilitating interaction with works of art to develop visual analysis skills.
These hour-long programs include discussions and in-gallery activities and are facilitated by members of the Chrysler Museum of Art Education team.

Visual Literacy Programs
The Chrysler strives to increase students’ ability to observe and develop visual analysis skills.
Students will:
- examine and analyze a selection of artworks
- form interpretations using visual evidence
- hone observational and descriptive abilities
- improve verbal and nonverbal communication skills
- increase collaborative learning abilities
Writing Programs
The Museum’s writing programs allow students to interact with primary source material in a manner that can enhance their writing ability.
Students will:
- broaden ideas about what constitutes a text
- practice observation and collect evidence for use in analysis
- learn a step-by-step process for visual analysis
- determine how meaning emerges through the process of analytical discussion
- consider the many lenses through which a text can be explored
- discover how multiple valid interpretations can coexist and inform each other
- apply secondary sources to a subject of analysis
- increase collaborative learning abilities
Ekphrastic Poetry
Students will:
- learn a step-by-step process for Ekphrastic poetry writing
- hone observational and descriptive abilities
- improve verbal communication skills
Collegiate Museum Symposium
This annual spring symposium is an opportunity for students to hone their research, writing, and presentation skills. Research projects and papers must be on works or artists in the Chrysler’s collection; historical or cultural links to the Chrysler’s collection; or research relating to the museum field. Students may present an alternative research idea which must be vetted by Museum staff. Participants will be selected by faculty.
Typical timeline:
- early fall: student (s) are selected by faculty and meet with Chrysler staff
- mid-fall: students’ research ideas are approved by faculty and Chrysler staff
- mid-fall/early-spring: students conduct research, write papers, and prepare their presentations
- mid-spring: students rehearse their presentations at the Museum
- late spring: students present their research during a symposium at the Chrysler
Other parameters:
- paper length of no more than 10 pages
- presentation length of no more than 20 minutes
