The Architecture of Slavery
November 1, 2019 — March 1, 2020
Frank Photography Gallery
The Chrysler Museum will present the work of visual artist Keris Salmon in Architecture of Slavery. On view November 1, 2019–March 1, 2020, the show will feature eighteen prints from the series We Have Made These Lands What They Are: The Architecture of Slavery, six works from Don’t Knock at the Door Little Child: Wessyngton Plantation and eighteen new cyanotypes.
African American artist and former journalist Keris Salmon was inspired to make these pictures after visiting the plantation once owned by her husband’s family. Over three years, she photographed Southern plantations and slave dwellings, pairing the images with archival text from slave owners and enslaved people. The cyanotypes display her recent work with architectural details and historical photographic processes to bring architecture and lived experiences alive in new ways.
