Beyond the Block
November 16, 2019 — February 9, 2020
Focus Gallery

The Chrysler Museum of Art, Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, and Peninsula Fine Arts Center have partnered with local jails to present the original artwork of inmates in Beyond the Block.
The Chrysler will feature more than twenty pieces that were created using only materials that are permissible in high-security environments such as jail-safe pens, food, and deodorant.
Beyond the Block is named for inmate housing units called blocks and the notion that the exhibition focuses on life outside of jail. It is a rare opportunity for people who are incarcerated to creatively express themselves beyond the confinement of their detention and for the general public to connect with people who are incarcerated. Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Hampton, and Newport News sheriff’s offices as well as the Hampton Roads and Western Tidewater regional jails invited inmates to participate in the exhibition.
