Chrysler Museum of Art Recognized by Southern Living Magazine as One of “17 of the South’s Best Art Museums”
NORFOLK, Va. (September 25, 2026) – Recently, the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk was recognized by Southern Living as one of “17 of the South’s Best Art Museums, from World-Famous Collections to Hidden Gems”. This national recognition from Southern Living with an audience of close to 25 million ran in the Aug. 2026 issue article with a focus on being “blessed with some of best art museums in the country and even the world.”
Southern Living writer, Carolanne Griffith Roberts captured the Museum and their collection in the magazine’s Aug. 2026 issue. “Walter P. Chrysler Jr., son of the namesake car company’s founder, acquired his first art piece at the age of 14 and never stopped. In 1971, he gifted 10,000 items as the core of the Chrysler Museum of Art. Today, the scope is even bigger and grander with 50 galleries and more than 35,000 objects. These include Bust of the Savior, one of Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s last sculptures, as well as Italian Renaissance and Baroque creations from Jacopo Tintoretto, Peter Paul Rubens, and Diego Velázquez, along with works from Eugène Delacroix, Édouard Manet, Paul Cézanne, and Mary Cassatt. The 10,000-piece glass collection—featuring Tiffany Studios, Émile Gallé, and René Lalique—is considered by many to be one of the most significant of its kind. There’s even a diminutive bowl from the Roman Empire that dates back 2,000 years. The Art Nouveau furniture, the 18th-century Worcester porcelain, and the photography collection (with daguerreotypes, Civil War albumen prints, 20th-century images, and portraits) all beg for your attention.”
Currently, the Chrysler Museum celebrates their current exhibition, “Constellations: Contemporary Jewelry from the Dallas Museum of Art,” a sweeping survey of wearable art spanning nearly a century of innovation. On view until January 3, 2027, this exhibition brings more than 350 works to One Memorial Pl, Norfolk via one of the most significant contemporary jewelry collections in the United States, formed by the Dallas Museum of Art.
“More than a survey of contemporary jewelry, Constellations celebrates artists’ ability to expand the boundaries of wearable art through innovation and creativity,” says Mark A. Castro, director of curatorial affairs at the Chrysler Museum. “The exhibition invites audiences to embrace the full range of the medium’s potential—to engage serious issues while also fostering playfulness and delight.”
Visitors are invited to the Chrysler Museum as they continue their mission of making art accessible. Admission is always free to the Museum. Membership is available for more in-depth experiences.
