Peter Bremers: Ice to Water
September 5, 2024 — January 19, 2025
Glass Project Space
Peter Bremers (Dutch, born 1957) is celebrated around the world for his monumental, abstract cast glass sculptures. This exhibition, Peter Bremers: Ice to Water, debuts new work by the artist, influenced by his journeys to Iceland and his meditations on the glaciers that are vanishing because of rapid changes in our global climate—melting ice, transformed into water. Sixteen sculptures inspired by the natural world are displayed alongside photographic images the artist captured during his explorations of these changing landscapes.
Bremers’ work as a sculptor reflects his philosophical and spiritual view of life as well as his urge to travel the world and bear witness to the varied creations of the Earth. In 2001, he made his first journey to Antarctica and later to the Arctic, leading to his Icebergs & Paraphernalia series. The artist described that series “Foremost as a tribute to nature and its endless beauty. It was a deliberate choice to still this ephemeral beauty—for that is what it is—in static images. It was my way of portraying my relationship with nature, without a moralistic statement; beauty first.”
Now, twenty years later, Bremers was moved to revisit his Icebergs series at a moment when climate change has accelerated the retreat of glaciers. “I can no longer ignore what we face daily,” the artist says. Simultaneously, Bremers reflects, “This impermanence is also full of beauty and wonder. From ice to water.”
This exhibition is organized by the Chrysler Museum of Art, and curated by Carolyn Swan Needell, Barry Curator of Glass.
Bremers’ work can also be found at Norfolk’s Glass Light Hotel, where his two monumental pink glass bunnies preside over the lobby and bar.
This exhibition is generously supported by the Perry Family Foundation.
Exhibition programming is supported as part of the Dutch Culture USA program by the Consulate General of the Netherlands in New York.
This project has received funding through a grant from the Netherland-America Foundation.
