Chrysler Museum of Art offers free after-hours programming beginning July

June 27, 2023 (Norfolk, VA) – Beginning Thursday, July 6, the Chrysler Museum of Art will stay open late once a month, providing visitors more time to experience the collection. First Thursdays will also include live music and a cash bar, gallery hosts on hand to give tours or answer questions and the opportunity to shop the Museum Shop and dine in the newly renovated Zinnia Café.

July 6 will kick off the series with holistic yoga and meditation in the galleries from GypSea Roots. Local musician Jimmy G. will provide live acoustic sounds and visitors can meet the Perry Glass Studio Assistants at the opening reception of their exhibition Peculiar People in the Margaret Shepherd Ray Family and Student Gallery.

In August, join the artist Heather Beardsley for a conversational walk through her current exhibition, Strange Plants. Explore intricately embroidered photographs, reinventions of found textiles, and even the transformation of her childhood doll house. Hear the artist weave together her inspiration from global travel, thoughts on craft, and passion for the environment. After the gallery talk, continue the conversation with an artist meet-and-greet in Huber Court. Logan Vath will perform live music.

On most nights, additional programming will be available. Visitors can expect to meet artists, hear fascinating lectures, participate in hands-on activities, and support local business owners.

The Museum admission is free, but fees may apply to some programming. Visit chrysler.org/events to see the upcoming First Thursdays.

ABOUT THE CHRYSLER MUSEUM OF ART

The Chrysler Museum of Art is one of America’s most distinguished mid-sized art museums, with a nationally recognized collection of more than 30,000 objects, including one of the great glass collections in America. The core of the Chrysler’s collection comes from Walter P. Chrysler, Jr., an avid art collector who donated thousands of objects from his private collection to the Museum. The Museum has growing collections in many areas and mounts an ambitious schedule of visiting exhibitions and educational programs each season. The Chrysler has also been recognized nationally for its unique commitment to hospitality with its innovative gallery host program.

The Perry Glass Studio is a state-of-the-art facility on the Museum’s campus. The studio offers programming for aspiring and master artists alike in a variety of processes, including glassblowing, fusing, flameworking, coldworking and neon.

In addition, the Chrysler Museum of Art administers the Moses Myers House, a historic house in downtown Norfolk, as well as the Jean Outland Chrysler Library. For more information on the Chrysler Museum of Art, visit chrysler.org.
