Lawful Use of Chrysler Online Images

The Chrysler Museum is a national leader in making art from its permanent collection available online. Making art accessible to all is at the core of our educational mission, but with that accessibility comes responsibilities.

It's very important to distinguish between works in the public domain -- generally (but not always) any book published before 1923 or the work of any artist 70 years after his/her death -- and works that are copyright protected.

We provide copyright information on all works available through our online database, and in the case of copyrights held by ARS or VAGA, art is available in thumbnail-size only. While there are "Fair Use" exceptions in copyright law, most notably for educational use or critical reviews, the rights on the use of copyright images lies with the copyright holder, and permission must be obtained in advance of use.

Rights & Reproductions

Medium resolution images of works in the Museum collection may be downloaded for study, personal, and educational use directly from the Chrysler website: http://collection.chrysler.org.

High resolution images in the form of digital images for publication or commercial use must be requested from rights&reproduction@chrysler.org. Provide as much information as possible concerning the image(s) and intended use, as well as deadlines for delivery of material.

Upon receipt of your request, we will respond confirming your request and provide an invoice for the total fee for your materials, if applicable. You will also receive a reproduction agreement form, containing the appropriate caption(s) for the image(s), as well as any stipulations regarding reproduction. A signed copy of this form must be returned along with payment of the invoice before the image will be released. Requests for existing photography are generally fulfilled within two weeks. Those requiring new photography may take four to six weeks for completion.
