AAMD Diversity Internship Program
The Chrysler Museum of Art has been selected as one of 10 American museums to participate in the Association of Art Museum Directors’ (AAMD) paid internship program for college students from underrepresented communities. Focused on students who are in their sophomore, junior, or senior years, the program will provide an opportunity for students who have begun to solidify their academic interests and potential career path to get hands-on experience in an art museum for 12 weeks during the summer of 2020 while earning a stipend of $6,300.
The Chrysler-AAMD Intern will focus on a curatorial project that seeks to deepen engagement with the permanent collection by performing research, making object selections, coordinating art moves, developing didactics and other educational materials, and engaging with teams throughout the institution. The Chrysler-AAMD Intern will work closely with Seth Feman, the Deputy Director for Art & Interpretation, and Allison Taylor, the Director of Education, developing mentoring relationships that will ensure ongoing opportunities for career development during the internship and in the future. In addition to the stipend, the selected intern will be provided with opportunities for paid travel with their mentor to a museum-field conference, to network, develop professional opportunities, and meet their fellow AAMD-sponsored interns from other institutions.
To apply, please submit a CV, an academic writing sample, and a letter (not to exceed two pages) that explains the applicant’s interest in museum work in general and the Chrysler in particular. Applications must be submitted by March 1 at 5 p.m. The Museum will make its selection and contact the candidate by March 30. As part of the internship, the intern will be expected to attend the annual American Alliance of Museums conference from May 17 to 20 (costs will be covered). By submitting materials, the applicant confirms availability during those dates.
Following the completion of the internship, both the intern and Museum supervisor will submit a written report assessing the program, the goals, and the outcomes. To assess outcomes for future planning and development, participants will also be asked to provide a performance review of the intern, and interns will be asked to provide a self-assessment.
