Eric Carle: Moonlit Nights & Other Illustrations

On View

June 14, 2019 — September 8, 2019

Location

Special Exhibitions Gallery

Eric Carle: Moonlit Nights & Other Illustrations will present more than 80 original works by the beloved picture book author and illustrator Eric Carle.

Famous for his soulful representations of insects, animals, and fables, the artist traditionally illustrates daytime scenes by depicting figures against white backgrounds. To create nighttime scenes, however, he paints his backgrounds in deep blues and swirling indigoes.

The works in this exhibition focus on the artist’s dreamy nighttime scenes and the stories they tell about twinkling stars, blinking fireflies, and the gently smiling moon. The selection of works spans the artist’s long career and come from more than 30 Eric Carle books. Highlights include selections from The Very Hungry Caterpillar (1969), The Very Quiet Cricket (1990), Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me (1986), and Draw Me a Star (1992). Visitors of all ages will enjoy hands-on interactives, artmaking activities, and a reading library equipped with a range of Eric Carle’s books.

From the Artist

"I make my pictures out of handpainted tissue papers. My painted papers are like my palette. Each sheet of tissue paper is painted with many layers of paint with different textures and colors."
