Who are the boat people? What are their stories? To learn more about their experiences, join Kimberli Gant, PhD, the Chrysler’s McKinnon curator of modern and contemporary art, in conversation with Tuan Andrew Nguyen and Tracey Nguyen Mang to explore the exodus of Vietnamese individuals and families from their home country after the conflict in Vietnam. Nguyen and Mang will discuss their personal histories, creative endeavors, and the legacies of the generations known as the boat people.
Nguyen’s 2020 film The Boat People, on view at the Chrysler, is a dreamy, fantastical tale of children navigating a dystopian world in the former area of Bataan, Philippines. Nguyen filmed the project at the former Philippines Refugee Processing Center, where hundreds of thousands of people fled after the war.
Mang, the founder of The Vietnamese Boat People Podcast, was born in Vietnam. When she was a baby, her father and oldest brother fled the country by boat. Her three older brothers followed, and in 1981, her mother braved the journey with three girls under the age of ten. The family reunited in the United States, where Mang lives today. Her podcast shares the stories of families like hers.
