Bring your pencils and sketchbook for an informal drawing group in the galleries. Practice close observation of a work of art, hone your skills, and meet like-minded artists. Artist and educator Rowena F. Finn will facilitate the sessions, providing inspiration and feedback.
The doomed yet beautiful sculpture, Peter Stephenson’s The Wounded Indian, is the subject for this month’s Sunday Sketchers. The bleeding gash in his torso, caused by the arrow nearby, suggests conflict with a rival tribe. Yet many would have understood his tragic demise as a consequence of white settlers’ lust for wealth and Indians’ failure to conform to “civilized” customs. Although viewers were likely resigned to the passing of the “vanishing race,” works like The Wounded Indian acknowledged that the frontier had long been home to Native Americans.
Please bring a sketchbook and pencils. Dry media only.
$5 for Museum members, $8 for non-members, and registration is recommended.
