In the Space Between: Discovering Glenstone’s Living Vision offers an in-depth look at the unique philosophy and carefully considered visitor experience offered by Glenstone Museum in Potomac, Maryland. This 45-minute talk will trace the development of Glenstone’s collection, emphasizing the museum’s commitment to deep engagement through its integrated approach to art, architecture, and nature. A case study of a major long-term installation reveals the care and complexity involved in faithfully realizing an artist’s vision at the highest level – and the extraordinary lengths the Glenstone team undertakes to honor that vision. Together, these elements illuminate Glenstone’s commitment to creating a contemplative, living environment where the artworks on view are experienced with intention and depth.

Nora Severson Cafritz is Senior Director of Collections at Glenstone Museum in Potomac, Maryland. Under the direction of the founders, she oversees Glenstone’s 2,000-piece contemporary art collection and art program. She serves on the museum’s Leadership Team, driving overall strategy, team management, and culture. Cafritz is responsible for organizing exhibitions, managing the loan program, editing publications, and supervising a team of around 20 curators, conservators, and collections specialists, as well as working closely with artists on acquisitions and site-specific commissions. At Glenstone, she has organized over a dozen major monographic exhibitions including recent presentations by Cady Noland, Faith Ringgold, Arthur Jafa, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Lygia Pape, Martin Puryear, and Michael Heizer. Prior to joining Glenstone, she worked in external affairs at the National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian Institution.

Through the generous support of our members, the Norfolk Society of Arts offered world-class lectures to the vibrant Hampton Roads community that are free and open to the public. The NSA’s free lecture series was established in the 1950s and continues to bring notable curators, historians, architects, journalists, professors, and others to the Chrysler Museum of Art. Consider becoming a member today.

Lectures are held in Kaufman Theater at 11 a.m., with refreshments served in Huber Court at 10:30 a.m.

Free, registration not required.
