Chrysler Museum of Art Commemorates the Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War

NORFOLK, Va. – (April 2011) – The Chrysler Museum of Art presents The Civil War: Visual Perspectives, Then and Now as part of the effort to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. The Chrysler is home to one of America’s largest and most comprehensive collections of photographs documenting the Civil War

A selection of photographs, paintings, and prints records and reflects on different aspects of the war and its meaning for nineteenth century and contemporary Americans.  The show includes works ranging from the battlefield photographs of Mathew Brady, Timothy O’Sullivan, and Alexander Gardner; to a series of paintings by Benjamin Richardson documenting the battle between the ironclads Monitor and Merrimack (as the C.S.S. Virginia); to contemporary photographic images of Civil War re-enactors by Willie Anne Wright, and a group of challenging prints by artist Kara Walker.  Many of the works in the exhibition are drawn from the Chrysler’s extraordinary collection of Civil War images. 

The Chrysler Museum of Art is one of America’s most distinguished mid-sized art museums with a world-class collection of more than 30,000 objects, including one of the great glass collections in America. The Museum is located at 245 West Olney Road in Norfolk and is open Wednesdays, 10 a.m.-9 p.m.; Thursdays-Saturdays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sundays, noon-5 p.m. The Chrysler is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, as well as on major holidays.
