Guided Visits

The Chrysler Museum of Art offers guided tours of its collection and special exhibitions for groups of all ages.  Tours engage groups in active looking and exploration, fostering critical thinking skills and deeper interpretation of works of art that relate both to school curriculum and personal experiences.  Booking is as easy as A-B-C:

  1. Review our Tour Themes to determine which topic relates best to the goal of your visit.
  2. Schedule your tour by completing a Tour Request Form online, which tentatively reserve a day and time.  (Please note that tours are not guaranteed until you receive a confirmation email.)
  3. Print and retain the educator-information-packet.pdf.  This contains essential information related to parking, entering, visiting and leaving the Museum.

School Partnerships

This program combines visits to the Museum with planning and professional development between teachers and the Museum's Education Department. The Museum has worked with Norfolk Public Schools to bring all 4th-grade students for A World of Discoveries in Art, with Chesapeake Public Schools to bring 6th grade students to explore the theme Understanding Civics through Art, and partnered with Suffolk art teachers to bring 150+ middle school students to see the collection and view performances by the Virginia Stage Company.  To find out more, contact Jennifer Schero, Museum Educator for School Programs.

Norfolk Teachers:  Download your World of Discoveries pre-visit presentation and the PDF of teachers' notes here!

Teachers' Nights

The Education Department hosts several Teachers’ Nights throughout the school year.  These free networking events off opportunities to explore the Museum’s collection, participate in Gallery Talks, receive free classroom resources, and to hear about special exhibition tours and programs for schools.  Certificates of participation are available.

SAVE THE DATE:  October 26, 2011 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Summer Teacher Institute

The Chrysler Museum of Art welcomes tidewater area K-12 teachers for a unique five-day, collection-based series of workshops in the summer, cultivating connections between the Museum’s collection and individual content areas. Participants spend each day exploring themes related to objects from ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt, as well as works from Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. The goal of the Institute is to offer educators the opportunity to explore new entry points for lessons and learning.  Click here to learn more.

Professional Development

The Education Department regularly hosts workshops for educators, working with school division personnel to develop engaging and tailored opportunities to find connections between art and core subject areas.  Whether exploring American history, science of glass or participating in Teach American History partnerships, the Chrysler Museum of Art is a great resource for educators and students.  Schedule a workshop for your school or division today.  Email Jennifer Schero, Museum Educator for School Programs.
